Coles County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. As of 2000, the population was 53,196. Its county seat is Charleston, which is also the home of Eastern Illinois University. . The county is part of the Charleston - Mattoon Micropolitan Statistical Area.

The storm came up fast on Kirschner Lumber in Mattoon. "I looked out the window and part of our building was flying over the top of our existing building,": says co-owner Alan Lord. "I knew we had some problems outside." Their roof flew on to the highway forcing drivers to detour. "We had help pulling product and debris off the road," says Lord, "so we're just trying to pick up the pieces right now." A nearby billboard is also in pieces. The sign was torn off. Half crashed to the ground. The other half of the billboard flew across highway 45 and ended up behind a row of SUVs at Pilson Auto Center. Banged up cars and broken glass scatter the car lot now. Over in Charleston, power lines are down. Sheds are ripped apart and limbs have cracked off trees. One tree split in half and fell on a home. "Half the tree fell on the house," says renter Brad Bonewitz. "The other fell on the garage." It happened while the family was watching a funnel cloud up above. "It wasn't coming down," says Bonewitz. "It was just coming about midway down. At about that time, the house shook and fell on the back of the garage. I'm just glad no one was hurt." Me and my friend travis racing in pro class at coles county dragway. He went 517 to my 537. He went 2 off lifting and I went 2 off all out. He took .02 stripe. It was a great race and he went on to the final 4. It was my first official loss in pro and the first time Parklands car won money
