But the game was unexpectedly tough for Sao Paulo, a three-time Copa Libertadores champion. Playing before a boisterous crowd at Morumbi stadium, Sao Paulo dominated the offensive action from the start but had trouble penetrating the stubborn Audax defense. The visitors massed up in back and shut down the high-powered Brazilian attack. Defender Patricio Gutierrez drove Adriano to distraction with his tight coverage, and the striker had just one good chance in the first half, firing wide of the left post a minute before halftime. Midfielder Jorge Wagner tested Audax 'keeper Mario Villasanti with a booming shot from far out, but the ball hit Villasanti and he cleared it away.
