Chatham County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. The county seat and largest city is Savannah. In the official US Census of 2000, Chatham County had a total population of 232,048. However, the latest US Census estimate (2008) indicates that this figure has grown to 251,120, making Chatham the most populous Georgia county outside the Atlanta metropolitan area. Chatham is one of the original counties of Georgia, created February 5, 1777. It is named after William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham.
Chatham County is one of three counties that constitute the Savannah Metropolitan Statistical Area.
