Carles Puyol i Saforcada (-caˈkarɫəs puˈjɔɫ; born 13 April 1978) is a Spanish footballer who plays for FC Barcelona and the Spanish national team.

Mainly a central defender, he can also play on either flank, especially as a right back. He also served as a longtime team captain for his only club FC Barcelona after taking over from Luis Enrique in August 2004, going on to appear in more than 500 official games for the team and win 15 major titles, notably five La Liga and three UEFA Champions League championships.

A Spanish international on nearly 100 occasions, Puyol was part of the squads that won the Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup tournaments.

Xavi and Pedro put Barca two up within 17 minutes, while Villa made it a night to remember at a packed Camp Nou with two goals early in the second half and substitute Jeffren Suarez added a fifth right at the end. To add insult to injury for Madrid, they finished the match with ten men after Sergio Ramos pushed Carles Puyol in the face late on. It was some revenge for Barca - and Guardiola - after Mourinho, then coach of Inter Milan, knocked the Catalan side out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage last season here. Mourinho handed a rare start to France striker Karim Benzema, out of favour for most of this season, after Gonzalo Higuain failed a late ...
