Caribbean Utilities Company, Ltd. (Tsx - CUP.U), known locally as "CUC", commenced operations as the only public electric utility in Grand Cayman, the largest of the three Cayman Islands, in May 1966. The Company currently has an installed capacity of 114.63 megawatts (MW), and a new record peak load of 85.03 MW was experienced in September 2004.

The company has more than 200 employees, most of whom are Caymanian, producing electricity from diesel fueled generators. In the past, the company has recorded substantial damage to its assets from hurricanes.

CUC is partly owned by Fortis Inc., a holding company based in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. CUC's shares are traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

United Nations, New York, 14 January 2010 - Nearly all government buildings in Port-au-Prince have been destroyed including the Presidential Palace, the main parliament building, prisons, schools and hospitals. MINUSTAH Scenes of destruction on the 14th framed the capital of Haiti, Port-au-Prince, as aftershocks continued. Almost all of Haiti's public buildings and utilities have been destroyed. Among the public buildings that collapsed were the National Palace (Head of the Government), the main parliament building, the DGI Building (tax headquarters), the National Court, and Ministry of Finance building. Communications were cut off, roads were blocked by rubble and trees, electric power was interrupted and water was in short supply. United Nations agencies are working around the clock to provide urgently needed assistance to the victims of the devastating earthquake, which is estimated to have affected one third of the Caribbean nations nine million people, a population that was already one of the most vulnerable in the world. Seventy-two hours after a massive earthquake struck Haitis capital Port-au-Price and neighbouring areas, mass graves are being dug up in the outskirts of the city to bury the dead, which could reach up to a hundred thousand. The Minister of Public Health said that managing the bodies is one of the top health priorities, to prevent epidemics, and due to the enormous scale of the task bodies are being piled into heaps and buried together in nameless graves. SOUNDBITE (Creole) Dr. Alex Larsen, Minister of Public Health: "The urgent intervention here is to manage the bodies. We have to get them out, and sanitize the area, disinfect it. And we have to prevent epidemics." Haitis Minister of Civil Protection said the government expects more than 50000 dead, closer to 100000. He says 750000 may be homeless, and 250000 wounded.
