     Home | bridge type | Cable-stayed bridge

A cable-stayed bridge is a bridge that consists of one or more columns (normally referred to as towers or pylons), with cables supporting the bridge deck.

There are two major classes of cable-stayed bridges: In a harp design, the cables are made nearly parallel by attaching them to various points on the tower(s) so that the height of attachment of each cable on the tower is similar to the distance from the tower along the roadway to its lower attachment. In a fan design, the cables all connect to or pass over the top of the tower(s).

Compared to other bridge types, the cable-stayed is optimal for spans longer than typically seen in cantilever bridges, and shorter than those typically requiring a suspension bridge. This is the range in which cantilever spans would rapidly grow heavier if they were lengthened, and in which suspension cabling does not get more economical, were the span to be shortened.

www.lantauonline.com for stunning images and details of Lantau Island, Hong Kong. This time-lapse movie shows the drive from North Point Hong Kong Island to Mui Wo on Lantau Island. It shows the diversity of the Hong Kong territory, from the high rise concrete, steel and glass, in Hong Kong and Kowloon to the mountains, beaches and greenery on Lantau. It also showcases some fabulous engineering and infrastructure, and some not so fabulous driving by yours truly (and some idiot in a Lexus who cuts me up in Wan Chai in the first minute or so of the film). The route starts from an apartment block in North Point, travels along the Island Eastern Corridor, through the Central District, under the Victoria Harbour through the Western Tunnel, over the new Stonecutters Bridge (the second longest cable spanning bridge in the world), over the Lantau Link Bridge (the longest double deck rail and road bridge in the world), along the North Lantau Highway, crosses over the mountains to the prohibited zone of South Lantau via the new Tung Chung Road, and finishes along the South Lantau Road, through Pui O, before ending at Mui Wo (Silvermine Bay) Ferry Pier.
