Blue Air Transport Aerian S.A is a low-cost airline based in Bucharest, Romania. It started operations in December 2004 and operates services to European destinations. Its main base is Bucharest Baneasa.The airline recently focused also on other Romanian airports, such as Arad, Cluj-Napoca, Bacău and Sibiu. The airline, which currently ranks #2 in the Romanian market after TAROM, will by this November slip down to third place after Wizz Air. In 2010 the airline opened its first base outside Romania, in Larnaca, Cyprus with negative economic results and this resulted in the closure of the base on 15 September of 2010.
Blue Air has one of the oldest fleets in European Union airlines with the average age of more than 15 years.
The airline has been characterised by rapid expansion, a result of the deregulation of the air industry in Europe in 1992 and the success of its low cost business model. Blue Air is one of the largest airlines in Eastern Europe in terms of passenger numbers.
In 2010 the airline has big economic difficulties,and this is the main reason it returned all the 737-800 aircraft back to the leasing companies.
