Beersheba (Officially Be'er Sheva; , ; ; , ; ) is the largest city in the Negev desert of southern Israel. Often referred to as the "Capital of the Negev", it is the seventh-largest city in Israel with a population of 194,800.

Beersheba grew in importance in the 19th century, when the Ottoman Turks built a regional police station there. The Battle of Beersheba was part of a wider British offensive in World War I aimed at breaking the Turkish defensive line from Gaza to Beersheba. In 1947, Bir Seb'a ( ), as it was known, was envisioned as part of the Arab state in the United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine. When the Arabs rejected the United Nations resolution declaring Israel an independent state, the Egyptian army amassed its forces in Beersheba as a strategic and logistical base. In October 1948, the city was conquered by the Israel Defense Forces.

Beersheba has grown considerably since then. A large portion of the population is made up of Jews who immigrated from Arab countries after 1948, and has been significantly boosted since 1990 by immigrants from Ethiopia and the former Soviet Union. With the influx of Russian immigrants, chess became a major sport in Beersheba. The city is now Israel's national chess center, home to more chess grandmasters than any city in the world.

Beersheba Video

One for the surplus fans. In 1917 the British and ANZAC forces in what is now Israel were runnning out of water. While the British and New Zealanders had tried to take the town for months, a last ditch attempt was devised using the Australian Light Horse. Expecting the Australians to advance within a mile, dismount and attack on foot, as they normally did, the Australians mounted the last succesful Cavalry charge in the history of modern warfare - In three hours they achieved what the British Army had been attempting for three months. Ironically, all Australians know about Gallipoli, possibly one of the greatest disasters of WWI, but nobody knows of the amazing achievements by the Light Horse in the dark days of 1917.

The climactic charge of the Lighthorsemen. I don't care what any one says - this will forever be for me the greatest charge by mounted forces ever filmed. From the movie "The Lighthorsemen."

A tribute to the Australian men and horses who fought and lost their lives on foreign soil in the first world war. Many men died at Gallipoli, the western front and palestine. The charge of the 4th light horse at Beersheba is considered the last successful cavalry charge in history. 800 horses and men charged at full gallop on 31st of october 1917. Despite the victory and low level of casualties, only one of the 74000 horses returned to Australia. The rest were shot after the soldiers were told they could not bring them home. Many of them plaited a lock of their horse's mane and put it in their pocket to remember them by, before they had to kill them.

The charge is successful, now comes taking the wells. The actions of the one trooper (capturing the artillery piece, finding the fuse for the wells, stopping the explosions, etc) are true, and I understand he won a medal for his actions. From the movie "The Lighthorsemen."

Dedicated to the men of the Australian 4th Light Horse Brigade on the 91st anniversary of the (so-called) last successful cavalry charge in history on 31st October 1917 at the Battle of Beersheba during the Sinai and Palestine Campaign of the Great War. The Battle of Beersheba took place on 31 October 1917, as part of the Sinai and Palestine campaign during World War I. The highlight of the battle was the now famous charge of the Australian 4th Light Horse Brigade, which covered some six kilometres to overrun and capture the last remaining Turkish trenches, and secure the surviving wells at Beersheba.

------------- From The Lighthorsemen (Australia, 1987) directed by Simon Wincer, with Jon Blake, Peter Phelps, John Walton e Tim McKenzie. Violence has continued in the Gaza Strip for a sixth day, after calls for a UN-backed ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militants foundered. A series of Israeli air strikes hit the parliament building and the justice ministry. There are reports of damage to a children's hospital. Rockets fired by Hamas militants have again landed in Beersheba, some 40km (24 miles) inside Israel. Israel on Wednesday rejected calls for a 48-hour truce to allow aid into Gaza. A draft UN resolution put forward by Egypt and Libya failed after the US and UK complained that it called on Israel to ends its air assaults but made no mention of Hamas rocket attacks against Israel, which they say started the latest hostilities. Since the Israeli air offensive began on Saturday, jets and attack helicopters have targeted Hamas security compounds, government buildings, smuggling tunnels under the border with Egypt and homes belonging to militant leaders. Palestinian medical officials say 391 Palestinians have died in the Israeli air strikes; the UN says 25% of these were civilians. Four Israelis have been killed by rockets fired from Gaza, which is under Hamas control.
