Baxter State Park is a large wilderness area permanently preserved as a state park, located in Piscataquis County in north-central Maine. The Park was established by 28 donations of land, in Trust, from Park donor Percival P. Baxter between the years of 1931 and 1962, eventually creating a Park of over 200000 acre (809.4 km2) in size. Baxter Park is not part of the Maine State Park system. Sole governance is provided by the Baxter State Park Authority, consisting of the Maine Attorney General, the Maine Commissioner of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and the Director of the Maine Forest Service. The Park is independently funded through a combination of revenues from trusts, user fees and the sale of forest products from the Park's Scientific Forest Management Area. The park is home to the state's highest peak, Katahdin. The number of visitors to the Park declined from 75,000 in 2000 to 55,000 in 2005, but since 2005 visitor use has been slowly increasing.

Two friends and I climbed to the top of Mount Katahdin on July 26th, 2008. We left the roaring brook parking lot at 0630, went to Chimney pond (arrived around 0830 and from there took the Dudley trail to the top of Pamola Peak arriving at around 1045, from there we then took Knifes Edge, to Baxter Peak arriving around 1215. We stayed up there for about an hour and began our decent at approximately 1320 and descended down the Saddle Trail, from there we went back to Chimney pond and returned the long way to the Roaring Brook parking lot. It was a great adventure.

Driving on the Golden Road, Telos Road and then the Useless Road in Maine around Baxter State Park. These roads are not used for much besides logging. Don't play with them or you play with fire. A bit bumpy.

On August 1, 2009, we took the Helon Taylor Trail across the Knife's Edge to the top of Mt. Katahdin. The northernmost part of the Appalachian Trail. On the way down we took the Saddle Trail. It was one of the most fun hikes that I've ever done.
