The Bangladesh national football team (Bangla: বাংলাদেশ জাতীয় ফুটবল দল) is the national team of Bangladesh controlled by the Bangladesh Football Federation. It is a member of the AFC and has yet to qualify for the World Cup finals. They were dismissed in the first round of their only Asian Cup appearance to date in 1980, and have once been South Asian champions once, defeating the Maldives in the final via penalties, as hosts in 2003. As is the case elsewhere on the subcontinent, top-level football in Bangladesh is played somewhat in the shadow of the country's test cricket team. The team was founded in 1972, and joined FIFA in 1974.
