Charlie Sloth has been on a road-trip to find the hottest rappers up North and try to understand why rap music in the UK is dominated by the London scene. He's travelled from Newcastle to Liverpool, Manchester to Sheffield, Huddersfield to Leeds - spent time in boxing gyms with aspiring MC's, and met feared battle-rappers working the night-shift in Morrisons. From rap to grime to bassline to house; this is the story of the MC scene in the North of England right now. It's Grime Up North is Radio 1 and 1Xtra's first multi-platform documentary which means you can choose to watch or listen across the Radio, TV and Online.

Rare interview, for some reason included on a Leigh Pop Festival (August 27th, 1979) bootleg. There are several unknown interviews with Joy Division and its members, but most of them are very poor quality. The most famous interview is the "Something Else" BBC2 TV one, recorded live on 15 September, 1979. This one we have here today is the Blackburn Radio Interview, recorded in April 1980. It was Ian's very last interview, featured in the JD documentary (although in that documentary, the quality is vastly superior to what's heard here, and it only mentions the part about the US tour and The Buzzcocks). At least you can still hear and make out what they're saying here. Parts of this interview, including some previously unheard snippets, were also aired on BBC Manchester in 1988. Unofficial recordings of both broadcasts exist. Ian was once quoted as all of his lyrics being open to interpretation, back at the early start of JD's career, but in this interview, he says something about all of his songs "being about personal relations and how people cope with certain things". 2:45 Complete contradiction there, isn't it? Just goes to show that Ian meant every word he said, and the whole lyrical interpretation thing was absolute bullshit. The notions of exploitation and sensationalism, as Peter Saville said, were laying right there. Annik was right to be fearful, wasn't she? Here's my best attempt at decoding the interview. Ian stutters a lot, by the way: Ian: ...Improved as ...
