Asmara International Airport, formerly known as Yohannes IV International Airport is an airport in Asmara, the capital of Eritrea.

In 2004, the airport served 136,526 passengers (+11.8% vs. '03).

Asmara Airport has severe capacity restrictions, due to its small terminal, short runway and 1.5 mile altitude. This means that large jet aircraft (like an A380, MD-11 or 747) cannot fly to the airport. Aircraft of this size would need to use Massawa International Airport, on the Eritrean coast. Currently the Eritrean government in collaboration with the Pakistani government is constructing a multi-million-dollar terminal, thanks to money from a new gold mine. The airport underwent substantial renovation in early 2011, and the new Eritrean Airlines are currently flying there. The GOE (government of Eritrea)is currently paving and repaving the roads of Asmara International.
