a short vid on shrovetide that was made with me narrating for current TV which was 1st shown in America and afterwards in England. Ashbourne royal shrovetide football is played every year on shrove tues and ash wed in Ashbourne Derbyshire the only true rule is no murder or manslaughter and the goals are three miles apart . Play starts at 2.00 pm and if not goaled finishes at 10.00 pm however if the ball is goaled before 5.00 pm another ball is turned up.

Today i was lucky enough to catch up with an old friend. The talented singer songwriter Alan Burton. We both had the day off so decided to visit the idyllic setting of Dovedale which is in the Derbyshire Dales and Peak District catchment area. The sun was out and as we made our way over the famous 'Stepping Stones' (not filmed as there were too many people about and i bottled out) we stepped into a serene riverside journey. Watch in awe as Alan kicks of proceedings with a standing jump from the middle of the river to land safe and dry on the bank and break a world record. We go on to see Hen Harriers, Dippers and Herons among other wildlife. The wild garlic blossomed which fired our tastebuds to the point that we found money growing on trees and tried to wrench it unsuccessfully from the tree trunks, rendering our hopes of a chippy tea in Ashbourne wishful thinking. We go on to visit the old Evans Kitchen studio which is gradually over time sinking into the Dovedale mudflats and becoming one with the earth. We finish events with a swig or two of Spanish wine which cringe-worthily leads to a sing song. I spot a lions face etched into the rock and attempt a Jim Bowen impression to wrap up a fun day out. Apologies for the occasional swear word, a few drinks were consumed on this fine afternoon.

The game is played over two days on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday, starting each day at 2.00 pm and lasting until 10.00 pm. If the goal is scored (in local parlance, the ball is goaled) before 5.00 pm a new ball is released and play restarts from the town centre, otherwise play ends for the day. Despite the name, the ball is rarely kicked, though it is legal to kick, carry or throw it. Instead it generally moves through the town in a series of hugs, like a giant scrum in rugby, made up of dozens if not hundreds of people. The two teams that play the game are known as the Up'Ards and the Down'Ards. Up'Ards traditionally are those town members born north of Henmore Brook, which runs through the town, and Down'Ards are those born south of the river. There are two goal posts 3 miles apart, one at Sturston Mill (where the Up'Ards attempt to score), the other at Clifton Mill (where the Down'Ards score). Although the Mills have long since been demolished part of their mill stones still stand on the bank of the river at each location and indeed themselves once served as the scoring posts. It starts on the A52 just up from the Markeaton Island. I used a modified Canon Ixus 430 to take the photographs. The video is made from a total of 1453 photographs shown in sequence. The weather was not much to write home about but its always good to get away in our little Eriba Caravan. Ashbourne is a nice site and is well located to enjoy some nice walks and cycle rides around Carsington Water which is right next door. Sandringham is well worth a visit and the Caravan Club site is up to its usual standard. Can't recommend the fish and chips though from the onsite van.
