Victory Secure Grand Final Spot ARCHIE Thompson's extra-time strike secured yet another Grand Final for Melbourne Victory as they advanced on aggregate after a cracking 2-2 draw with Sydney FC at the Sydney Football Stadium. With the two-leg tie deadlocked at 3-3 after the Sky Blues finished 2-1 up following the 90 minutes, the Victory struck through Thompson in the 123rd minute to break the stalemate and claim the tie 4-3 on aggregate. Melbourne captain Kevin Muscat caught the Sydney defence napping with his quick free kick to Thompson, who met the pass first time to beat Clint Bolton and send the visitors into their third decider in four years. While the Sky Blues should not have switched off, they may argue the free kick was not warranted in the first place. Sydney now meet Wellington in the preliminary final to decide Melbourne's opponents. Victory took a 2-1 advantage into Sunday's return leg but goals to Karol Kisel (penalty) and Mark Bridge - in reply to Robbie Kruse's early wonder strike for Melbourne - gave the Sky Blues a 2-1 win on the night before 23818 raucous fans. Melbourne, in the midst of a cramped playing schedule, almost found themselves down a goal after just 96 seconds. Alex Brosque's goal-bound header was cleared off the line by Tom Pondeljak in a tangle of arms, legs and torso. The visitors overcame that early scare to open the scoring through Kruse after a quarter of an hour. The slimline striker's season was feared over after he was cut down in a ...

Luck has deserted Melbourne Victory in the opening game of its Hyundai A-League championship defence following a shock 2-0 loss to the Central Coast Mariners at Etihad Stadium on Thursday night. In front of a healthy midweek crowd of nearly 19000, the 2008/09 champions went down following two goals in the first 15 minutes from the visitors. And both had an element of luck about them as Melbourne continued its poor record in season opening games now having won in the first round just once in five seasons of the Hyundai A-League. Melbourne began with four changes from the starting line-up from last year's second Grand Final triumph over Adelaide with New Zealand recruit Glen Moss replacing the departed Michael Theoklitos in goal while Grant Brebner, Leigh Broxham and Evan Berger were in for Nick Ward and Billy Celeski, who were on the bench, and Seb Ryall, who is now with Sydney FC. But Moss' first task for his new club was to pick the ball out of the net as the Mariners, who had been widely written off coming into the season following their disappointing Asian Champions League campaign, took an early lead. The former Wellington Phoenix keeper had no chance when a free-kick from John Hutchison was not cleared by the Victory defence and fell invitingly for Matt Simon to smash home from close range in the 10th minute. While Victory should still have done better in terms of clearing the free-kick, the home side was desperately unlucky in that the loose ball fell perfectly for ...
