Appalachia, Virginia Video

Many blue collar Democrats in Appalachia, and particularly West Virginia, are not ready for a black President. Here are a bunch of Hillary Clinton supporters voicing reasons why they would never vote for Senator Obama. It's a sad commentary of the education level of these people and racism in general. Update: 10-5-2008: Let me just say that I don't like the comments lumping all West Virginians into the same category. It isn't fair. I know that this video makes a lot of people angry, and it should, but let's try not to do the same things these people are doing and group a certain sections of the population into a category based on the deeds, actions or ignorance of a small group of people. I know a lot of people in West Virginia and when I was campaigning there for Senator Obama I met a LOT of good people. People that took me in their homes, fed me lunch and dinner and only want what most Americans want. A chance to make a decent living, support their families and to give their children a chance to do the same. {end update}

Pine Mountain is one of the few "ridge and valley" mountains in Southern Appalachia that overlaps with the central Appalachian coalfield of the Cumberland Plateau. Its folded layers tower above a dozen coalfield counties in Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Communities that are 3 centuries old are innovators and survivors in this rugged landscape. Their amazing music, outlook on life, and sense of place are rare in this world. This video chronicles two of the hardships these wonderful people faced in the last 170 years: The American Civil War and Mountaintop Removal Coal Mining.

A brief news segment telling about Appalachia's Ed "Stonega Stallion" Clark (#34), who played from 1966-1968 for the Bulldogs and set several school and state records as well as going on to become known as one of the greatest football players ever to come out of southwest Virginia. Clark signed with Purdue following high school but never made it through due to his grades, and later even tried at Appalachian State only to receive the same result. It is said that he also tried out for the Washington Redskins of the NFL at one point and was one of their final cuts. Clark was the uncle of brothers (and now-NFL players) Julius and Thomas Jones, who played for the Vikings of Powell Valley. Powell Valley's school, interestingly enough, is located just a few minutes down the road from Appalachia and the Bulldogs and Vikings have a strong rivalry between one another.

Democrat President Obama prior to becoming president stated the coal mining industry needs to go bankrupt, or something to that affect. In keeping with the Presidents goal, the Executive Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Lisa P. Jackson announced restrictions upon mountain top coal mining operations. These restrictions will curtail if not eliminate these operations in Kentucky and West Virginia, the Appalachia region. Much to the delight of the environmentalist who are in reality anti-capitalist. This type of mining in this region is done on private land, and yet the Federal government (the Democrats) is inserting itself on private property. 50% of electric in the USA comes from coal fired power plants. Of which 10% of that coal comes from mountain top mining. This will result in less coal being available to produce electricity, thus causing the price of electric you use to rise. This is another successful attempt by the Obama administration to degrade the standard of living in the United States of America. It is said the USA is the Saudi Arabia of coal. However this administration refuses to issue any new coal mining permits. So when the coal beings to run out, the brown outs will spread across the land like a prairie fire. On June 6, 2011, hundreds of people began a weeklong, 50-mile trek on West Virginia backroads to protest mountaintop removal mining and defend labor rights. Here is a Charleston Gazette video on the first day of the march. See Paul Nyden's related story here (from which the information below comes): wvgazette.com Nearly 250 marchers and supporters of the Appalachia Rising March on Blair Mountain gathered at the Marmet Baseball Field for a rally. An hour later, they headed toward Blair, a town near the Boone-Logan county border, where their march will end on Friday. The marchers plan to walk the same route more than 10000 coal miners took between Aug. 24 and Sept. 4, 1921, marching to Logan County to organize non-union miners. The 1921 March on Blair Mountain was the biggest armed conflict in American labor history. After several days of battles, federal troops arrived and ended the conflict. "We need to preserve Blair Mountain. It represents the movement that laid the foundation for our middle class, said Joe Stanley, a retired miner from Matewan in Mingo County. "We are marching in memory of those miners."

Magdalene Fry of Huntington, West Virginia, reads her letter to Michelle Obama to demand an end to mountaintop removal. Please urge your elected officials to pass the Clean Water Protection Act and Appalachian Restoration Act to make clean water available again to the people of Appalachia.
