Aircraft engine

Home | Aircraft | Aircraft engine

An aircraft engine is the component of the propulsion system for an aircraft that generates mechanical power. Aircraft engines are almost always either lightweight piston engines or gas turbines. This article is an overview of the basic types of aircraft engines and the design concepts employed in engine development for aircraft.

Aircraft engine Video

On the opening day (8th June 1989) Mikoyan test pilot Anatoliy Kvochur was making a demonstration flight in the single-seater Mig-29 '303' Blue. During the high-alpha/low-speed pass at 160m (525ft) that was to conclude the Fulcrum's aerobatic display, the starborad engine surged, belching a sheet of flame. Kvochur immediately selected full afterburner for the working engine; however at 180km/h (111mph) he had insufficient rudder and ailereon authority to counter the trust asymmetry and the result was inevitably an irrecoverable departure. The engine failed at 13hrs 44mins 57sec; the stricken fighter immediately yawed and rolled to starboard, the nose "falling through" until the aircraft entered a vertical dive at 13:45:01. 2.5 seconds later Kvochur ejected at 92m (302ft) after making sure that the aircraft would not hit the spectators. At 13:45:05 the fighter hit the ground beside the runway erupting into a fireball. The pilot landed a mere 30m (98ft) from the wreckage, the ejection seat impacted right next to him. To give a credit where credit is due, the airport's rescue & firefighting team was on the scene 55 seconds after the crash. Kvochur was rushed to hospital, but was released the same day with nothing worse than bruises and a cut above his right eyebrow from the oxygen mask. Indeed he had been extremely lucky as he had ejected oustide the seat's operating envelope, not to mention the proximity of the fireballs and the falling ejection seat. Yet the incident spoke ...

You will enjoy this video ONLY if you are really into the mechanics of large WWII era piston aircraft engines. You need high quality sound for this. Nothing like a 2100 horsepower aircraft engine starting up.

The spin was supposed to be a normal erect spin to the right, but for various unintentional reasons the spin went flat, up until that point I had never flat spun an aircraft. I eventualy mananged to get the aircraft into a normal erect spin from which I was able to recover. This aircraft is not fitted with an electric starter motor, so I was unable to restart the engine. During the "flare" to land the main undercarriage caught the top wires of a barbed wire fence that was invisible to me. After coming to rest inverted I waited 20mins for the rescue services to come and right the aircraft so I was able to exit via the outward opening canopy. The aircraft rotated 26 times total, I was extremely dissorientated after the recovery to straight and level flight, and was unable to read the instruments. From the video I estimate I recovered at about 700ft from an entry altitude of 3500ft. If you listen carefully you will hear me say:"I think this is it". At that stage I did not think I would be able to recover. However I continued to try various control inputs based on the aircraft attitude and rotational rate, which eventually effected a recovery. My thanks go to the emergency services that found me and allowed my escape.

Pilot Szabó "Topi" Zoltán survived. He stayed 1 minute after the blast in the burning mig, so he managed out the aircraft from civil areas. He won the "as the crow flies" trophy on riat 2003. Now he can fly only on subsonic planes cause the spinal-injurys he suffered at the ejecting. The video was made by another pilot on the ground. This was a practice, not an airshow. The inspection cleared up, that it was an engine failure (a blade blocked in the engine), and there was no other way out from this accident; the MIG factory approved that too. They have undertaken to renew some older MIG-29s of Hungary. [The aircraft "landed" hard by a farmer, who was just working there; this was the second time in his life, that a mig29 crashed on his land, he said maybe he shouldn't work anymore next to the AFB. Unfortunately the pilot (Rácz Zsolt) died in the crash on 28.07.1998; there exists a video about this too, www.youtube.com ].
