ARM Holdings plc (Lse - ARM, Nasdaq - ARMH) is a multinational semiconductor and software company headquartered in Cambridge, United Kingdom. Its largest business is in processors, although it also designs, licenses and sells software development tools under the RealView and KEIL brands, systems and platforms, system-on-a-chip infrastructure and software. It is considered to be market dominant in the field of mobile phone chips and is arguably the best-known of the 'Silicon Fen' companies.

The company was founded as Advanced RISC Machines, ARM, a joint venture between Acorn Computers, Apple Computer (now Apple Inc.) and VLSI Technology. The new company intended to further the development of the Acorn RISC Machine's RISC chip, which was originally used in the Acorn Archimedes and had been selected by Apple for their Newton project. The design was flexible and found continued design wins over time, and is now the processing core for many custom application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs).

ARM Holdings' primary listing is on the London Stock Exchange and it is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index. It has a secondary listing on NASDAQ.

ARM Holdings Plc (NASDAQ:ARMH) shares rose 32% to 362.4 pence in London trading, the most since it first sold shares, on speculation that Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) may be looking to buy the company, according to a Bloomberg report. ARM is the UK designer of semiconductors that are used in Apple's iPhone. Its designs are also used in the iPad tablet computer, according to ISuppli Corp., who added that Apple's acquisition of ARM would not give Apple's products a "competitive edge." In April, the company denied speculation that Apple may bid for it. CEO Warren East said that customers are able to license ARM's designs without having to buy the chip developer.

The chip-maker posted profits and revenues at the high end of their prior guidance ranges, and beat Wall Street analysts average expectations. Joining me to discuss TI's results is Macquarie analyst Shawn Webster. Shawn... 1. How did the quarter compare against your own predictions? 2. Should investors be concerned about margins and rising inventory? 3. Did they give gross margin outlook on the call? 4. ARM Holdings is winning 75% of tablet 1.0 designs. What is TI doing to boost it's position in chip-making for the budding tablet market? 5. What competition does TXN have from China-based or other international companies? Is there any pressure on pricing a result? 6. Does wireless continue to drive growth? 6. Where do you see the stock heading? PT? Thanks Shawn. Texas Instruments is now guiding for Q4 EPS $0.59 to $0.67 on revenues of $3.36 to $3.64 billion. For further updates subscribe."

ARM Holdings (ARMH) and ASML Holdings (ASML) are retreating, after JP Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz wrote that a supply glut of tablets may develop this year. The supply of tablets this year could exceed demand by 36%, as projections for sales of iPad competitors may be too high, the analyst warned. Shares of British chip maker ARM Holdings (ARMH) - which receives royalties from tablet sales - could be negatively impacted by a downward shift in sentiment towards the tablet space, he wrote. Shares of ASML Holding - which makes equipment for semiconductor manufacturers - could be hit by reduced equipment spending if the supply glut spreads to products other than non-Apple tablets.

Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) in January will unveil a version of its Windows operating system that will complement the chips designed by UK-based chip designer ARM Holdings (ARMH), people familiar with Microsoft's plans told Bloomberg. Microsoft's move deviates from its focus on the x86 chip technology offered by Intel (INTC) and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), The Wall Street Journal reports in its version of the same story. ARM chips consume less power than the x86 design and are thus commonly used in smartphones and tablet computers like the Apple Inc. (AAPL) iPhone and iPad, the reports said. Microsoft wants more presence in smartphones and tablets, the reports said.
