The .45 ACP (11.43x23mm) (Automatic Colt Pistol), also known as the .45 Auto by C.I.P., is a cartridge designed by John Browning in 1904, for use in his prototype Colt semi-automatic .45 pistol and eventually the M1911 pistol adopted by the United States Army in 1911. The .45 ACP has a good reputation for performance. The more energetic loads in the cartridge have the potential for remote wounding effects known as hydrostatic shock, but most attribute the effectiveness of the cartridge to large diameter bullets and reliable penetration.

45 ACP Video

We tested the Extreme Shock Air Freedom Round in a Springfield Armory XD service model 45 ACP vs. a 185 Winchester Silver tip on some watermelons. This shows that the AFR round does not fully penetrate a fleshly target. Which makes it good for home defense. This also shows how devastating a Winchester Silver Tip round is. More ballistics testing videos to come.

A runner pulls a 'charging target', a man sized target simulating a charging threat. It is pulled 21 feet over the course of 2.6 seconds. There is no buzzer; the student must react to the target's movement. Meanwhile, the instructor distracts the student with some meaningless conversation. 7 solid hits, 2.6 seconds, 21 feet.

The Glock is a chunk of a pistol but it packs a wallop...namely 11 rounds of .45 ACP. That's a lot of defensive lead in such a small package. Many still choose the .45 ACP chambering for their defensive pistol and it does perform well, especially with quality +P loads. But expect more weight, bulk, cost, and recoil with the .45 ACP. If you're ready for all of THAT then considering the sub-compact, double-stack Glock 30 as a carry option makes a lot of sense. It inherits all of the good Glock attributes that I've spoken to before in other vids: great reliability, accuracy, durability, good ergos, controls placement, good firepower options (takes 13 rd Glock 21 mags too), good sights, good value, proven track record, LOTS of accessories, simple fieldstrip and maintenance. Downsides on the Glock 30 are few but will include its 1.27" thick slide (makes ankle and maybe belly band carry tough) and the inherent , more rakish Glock grip angle. But that's about it. When compared against many 1911 offerings, the G30 will win in firepower and weight comparisons but will lose the thickness battle, the all-important carry dimension. Choosing a good carry option will help mitigate this Glock's thickness. These might include a quality inside-the-waistband holster, shoulder holster, and/or some fannypack options. Also at just 25.5 oz this powerhouse won't weigh you down especially for the stopping power offered. It is a powerful defensive option. /////////////Nutnfancy Likeability Scale ...

PART 1 OF 3: The Kimber Pro TLE II (LG) and the Pro Carry II will give you authoritative big bore capability in a smaller package. Yes the many designations and varieties offered by Kimber are confusing it takes some dedicated study of the Kimber catalog to clear it up. But isnt great to have such cool an d well-executed choices. These two versions have a 4 barrels (best compromise I say) and frames of steel and aluminum, respectively. Nutnfancy says no one will beat the quality, attention to detail, durability, and reliability of the Kimber 1911 designs and its my top PREMIUM choice of for the 1911 designcost be darned. My LE and civilian colleagues have only good reports of these pistols: extremely accurate, reliable, fast shooting, great sights, and (for a 1911) comfortable to carry. It wasnt too long ago that getting a 1911 with all the features of the Pro Carry Kimbers would cost you around $1500+ and probably a few trips to a competent, 1911-qualified gunsmith and even then it probably still had issues. Most of those mods were necessary to ensure reliability of the design with hollowpoint ammo. Now these options are the 1911 standard and most quality guns will include themjust like these Kimbers. Upsides are many and include: fine and precise front and backstrap checkering, excellent grips, beautiful matte finishes, lowered and flared ejection port, smooth feed ramp and chamber, bushing-less heavy match-grade barrel, light crisp trigger (skeletonized), beveled ...

Yep it's big and it's heavy but sometimes thats just what the doctor ordered. The Springfield Armory "Operator" model 1911 is a superbly made, full size, full weight 1911 pistol that incorporates many desirable features. Tipping the scales at 42 ounces unloaded, it will be a brick to carry. But as pointed out in the video sometimes that weight is good, kind of like when shooting at the range competitively or perhaps for shooters who can just "connect" better with such a gun. The mass will allow this .45 ACP chambered gun to shoot more quickly and more accurately compared to lighter weight guns in the same caliber. And some tactical operators, like the US Marine Expeditionary Units (MEUs), have opted for a 1911 despite this additional weight because of its fast shooting qualities and the retained durability of the design (some of their Kimber ICQBs 1911s are reported to have over 15000 rds a piece and still shooting). This "Operator" model includes many included 1911 modifications: forged frame, slide, and barrel, Picatinny accessory rail, flat mainspring housing, lowered and flared ejection port, loaded chamber indicator, carry bevel treatment, lightweight Delta⢠hammer, ambidextrous safety, memory padded beaver tail grip safety, Tritium precision fixed sights (proprietary), and Torx head grip screws. It is indeed expensive however it represents the same quality, durability, ergonomic, and reliability standards of many custom 1911 guns costing well over $3000. If you plan ...
