The .44 Special or .44 S&W Special is a smokeless powder center fire metallic cartridge developed by Smith & Wesson in 1907 as the standard chambering for their New Century revolver, introduced in 1908.

Shooting 8" swinging plates with different calibers to see the difference in reaction. This is not meant to be very scientific, but it's something subscribers have asked for. Most people know by now that the "knock-down" and "stopping power" talk is often goofy and irrelevant. Here, I'm just showing, for whatever it's worth, how much various common calibers move these plates. I'm shooting from 8 to 10 yards away. The plates are 8" in diameter and 3/8" thick. Ammo used is all standard factory ammo: .22 Long Rifle - 36 grain bullets .38 Special - 158 grain Lead HP 9mm - 147 grain FMJ .357 Magnum - 158 grain JHP .40 S&W - 180 grain FMJ .45 ACP - 230 grain FMJ 10mm - 180 grain JHP .44 Magnum - 240 grain JHP

The Schofield revolver was created as a cavalry pistol. Its efficient, break-open design could be operated one-handed. That made it easy to eject all six spent cartridges and reload the single action revolver while on horseback. The US Cavalry was slow to see the merits of the top break, but Jessie James, John Wesley Hardin, and Wild Bill Hickok saw the fast reloading capability as a distinct advantage in their line of work. After numerous trials, the US Army finally purchased three thousand top breaks with an improved top latch design. However, it was the Russian government that truly embraced the new sidearm. The Czar ordered 41000 top breaks with a modified grip design, lanyard ring, and a distinctive trigger spur. True to the originals, Uberti Top Break No. 3 2nd models are available in .38 Special, .45 Colt, and .44-40. However, a factor that really insured the success of the 1873 Winchester rifles was that Colt quickly offered its Peacemaker chambered in .44-40, as well. A cowboy could have both a lever-action rifle and his six shooter, and needed only one cartridge belt for both. Most Texas Rangers and every old West cowboy worth his salt carried 1873 rifles. Chappo, the son of Apache war chief Geronimo, packed an 1873. And Buffalo Bill carried an 1873 lever-action rifle along with a pair of .44-40 Colts in 1876 when he worked as an Army scout.
