The .38-40 Winchester is a 10 mm cartridge that was introduced by Winchester in 1874 and is derived from their .44-40 Winchester. Though this cartridge was introduced for rifles, it is a better pistol cartridge than rifle cartridge. It is not particularly well suited to hunting larger game but can be used successfully on smaller game animals, and for self defense. Current loadings are intended for pistols.

Winchester introduced the 38-40 Winchester Center Fire, or WCF, in 1874 as a companion to the popular 44-40 WCF. First chambered in the Winchester model 1873 lever action rifle, the 38-40 was also a popular handgun cartridge, being chambered in numerous revolvers such as the Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army.
