The A-League's 2009-10 season was the fifth season of the Australasian A-League football (soccer) competition.

The season marked the addition of two new teams from Queensland. Gold Coast United FC and the North Queensland Fury FC} made their A-League debuts at the start of the season. Because of this, Brisbane Roar FC were re-named to Brisbane Roar FC, as they were no longer the only A-League club from Queensland. With the inception of the two new clubs, many club transfers took place both within Australia and New Zealand, and around the world. The length of the regular season was longer than in previous years, with 27 rounds rather than 21, plus finals. The season began on 6 August, with Melbourne hosting the Central Coast at home. As well as these major changes to the league, the Pre-Season Challenge Cup was no longer held as part of the 2009-10 season due to a busier regular season schedule, and clubs attracting higher profile pre-season friendlies.

The Premiership and Championship double was completed by Sydney FC with victory over Melbourne in the final match of the regular season and on penalties in the Championship Grand Final.

A compilation/tribute to Melbourne Victory's no. 16, Costa Rican Carlos Hernández. EDIT: Includes footage up to 2009/10 round 11 (Newcastle 1:3 Melbourne). Hernandez has continued to be pivotal, but I couldn't fit those recent goals/assists within the song of the video. I plan to make a video at the end of this season, which will compile his season highlights. For now, enjoy this! Song: "Praise You" by FatBoy Slim, (c) 1998 Skint Records Sorry about the fairly low image quality EDIT: Thanks for all the positive feedback, I'm glad you all like it :) EDIT: I have made a higher-quality extended version which you can watch here: www.youtube.com

Luck has deserted Melbourne Victory in the opening game of its Hyundai A-League championship defence following a shock 2-0 loss to the Central Coast Mariners at Etihad Stadium on Thursday night. In front of a healthy midweek crowd of nearly 19000, the 2008/09 champions went down following two goals in the first 15 minutes from the visitors. And both had an element of luck about them as Melbourne continued its poor record in season opening games now having won in the first round just once in five seasons of the Hyundai A-League. Melbourne began with four changes from the starting line-up from last year's second Grand Final triumph over Adelaide with New Zealand recruit Glen Moss replacing the departed Michael Theoklitos in goal while Grant Brebner, Leigh Broxham and Evan Berger were in for Nick Ward and Billy Celeski, who were on the bench, and Seb Ryall, who is now with Sydney FC. But Moss' first task for his new club was to pick the ball out of the net as the Mariners, who had been widely written off coming into the season following their disappointing Asian Champions League campaign, took an early lead. The former Wellington Phoenix keeper had no chance when a free-kick from John Hutchison was not cleared by the Victory defence and fell invitingly for Matt Simon to smash home from close range in the 10th minute. While Victory should still have done better in terms of clearing the free-kick, the home side was desperately unlucky in that the loose ball fell perfectly for ...
