The 1988 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XV Olympic Winter Games, were a winter multi-sport event celebrated in and around Calgary, Alberta, Canada from 13 to 28 February 1988. The host was selected in 1981 after having beat Falun, Sweden and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy. Most events took place in Calgary, although Alpine skiing took place in Kananaskis and Nordic skiing and biathlon taking place in Canmore. The games were held after the 1988 Winter Paralympics in Innsbruck, the last time the two tournaments were not held in the same city.

Fifty-seven nations and 1,423 athletes participated in the games, with five countries making their debut in the Winter Olympics. Super-G made its Olympic debut, while curling, freestyle skiing, short track speed skating and disabled skiing were demonstration sports. Speed skating was held in an indoor rink for the first time and the games were extended to 16 days.

Similar to the 1988 Summer Olympics, the Soviet Union and East Germany dominated the events, coming in first and second in the overall medal table. As at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, the only previous games hosted in Canada, the host country failed to produce any gold medals. Matti Nykänen won all three ski jumping events. Yvonne van Gennip won three gold medals in speed skating, setting two world records. Alberto Tomba won two gold medals in alpine skiing. Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards and the Jamaica national bobsled team entered with little experience but gathered massive media attention, resulting in qualification rules for later games.

Eddie the Eagle Edwards was the first person from Great Britain to qualify for the Olympic Games in ski jumping. While working as a plasterer back home, Edwards had to cross the Atlantic to train, due to the UKs lack of facilities andsnow. He began ski jumping in Lake Placid, New York (home of the 1980 Olympic Winter Games), with borrowed equipment that was much too big for him. He was fully self-funded, but that wasnt his greatest obstacle: Edwards is very short-sighted and had to wear glasses while competing, which was a problem when they fogged up and blocked his vision completely. His unlikely story endeared him to fans at the Calgary 1988 Olympic Winter Games and all over the world. He quickly became a celebrity and even today his name and story remain closely associated with the 1988 Games. At the closing ceremony, he was singled out in a speech by the IOC president who said, At this Games some competitors have won gold, some have broken records and one has even flown like an eagle. At that moment, 100000 people in the stadium roared, Eddie! Eddie! It was the first time in the history of the Games that an individual athlete had been mentioned in the closing speech. After the 1988 Games, Edwards enjoyed a varied career in television and music, and in 2008 he returned to Calgary to help celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Games. Edwards is carrying the Olympic Flame as part of the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay International Media Program, developed by VANOC in ...

Winter Olympic Games '88 Movie from Edica Cinema website: www.cinema.edica.pl directed by Bartek Rogalewicz motion design Monika Tynecka produced by re.PUBLIK www.re.publik.pl Annual Push Cart Derby in Kingston is one of the biggest attractions of hot Jamaica. During the event, teams of several people pull handmade vehicles up a hill, then gather speed, jump in and down the hill they go to the cheering of crowded compatriots and curious tourists. In mid '80s the indisputable leaders of the event were Devon Harris, Dudley Stokes, Michael White and Samuel Clayton. In the summer of 1985 the four friends overheard some European tourists jokingly compare push carts to winter bobsleds. They decided to prove to the world that nothing is impossible and a bobsledding team may be created even under the hot Jamaican sun. After three years of hard work Davon, Dudley, Michael and Samuel were standing at the top of a bobsledding racing track in Calgary, where they saw ice and snow for the fist time in their lives. Despite technical problems the Caribbean amateurs became favorites with the fans and their participation -- one of the biggest sensations of the Winter Olympic Games in '88. The Jamaican bobsledding team has participated in the Olympics ever since. Visit campaign site www.cinema.edica.pl

Thank you! This is the theme from the 1988 Calgary Olympics, Winter Games. Kind of sounds like it could be used as a Disneyland theme somewhere, no? Original Message: These are the Fountains at the Bellagio on July 20, 2008. I enjoyed it, but - HELP - does anyone know what the music is? I'd really like to know, because I think it's really a great piece! I don't know the composer or anything though... I'd really appreciate any help anyone could give me with this!!
